Rihanna wants jewels from police

Singer Rihanna has asked the LA police to return jewellery taken as evidence the night she was allegedly attacked by her boyfriend Chris Brown.

Police took earrings and three rings from the singer hours before the Grammy Awards ceremony in February.

The items, which were on loan from a shop, are worth over $1.4m (£1m).

Lawyer Donald Etra, who represents the 21-year-old star, said the detective overseeing the case did not object to the return of the items.

The shop which owns the jewellery has asked Rihanna to give the goods back as soon as possible.

'Photographs'

Mr Etra told the BBC: "Apparently, initially, the police felt that it would be needed as evidence. Now the belief is that photographs would be more than sufficient.

"That being the case, we're asking the District Attorney to return the pieces."

The request for the return of the jewellery states that lawyers for Mr Brown are also happy for the pieces to be released.

Mr Brown, 19, was arrested after rowing with Rihanna in a parked car. Both singers cancelled their scheduled appearances at that evening's Grammy awards.

Later Mr Brown said he was "sorry and saddened" by the incident and had already sought counselling.

He also withdrew his name from Nickelodeon's Kid's Choice Awards after coverage of the events "shifted the focus from the music".

Last month Mr Brown was charged with assault and making criminal threats and is next due to appear in court on 29 April. He denies the charges.

A lawyer for R&B star Rihanna filed a motion in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Tuesday requesting a return of $1.4 million in jewelry the singer was wearing the day she was allegedly assaulted by Chris Brown.

Attorney Donald Etra said he has made several requests for three designer rings and a pair of earrings that were lent to Rihanna to wear to the Grammy Awards and were seized as evidence more than two months ago.

"The investigating officer gave me his opinion that photographs would be sufficient, and the D.A. said to write her a letter and they'd consider returning it," Etra said. "I have heard nothing since the last letter to the D.A."

Etra said that although the four designers who lent the jewelry were initially sympathetic to the situation, the delay has cost them money and they have begun to make daily inquiries about their property.

Sandi Gibbons, a spokeswoman for the district attorney's office, said the delay may have something to do with the fact that there hasn't been a preliminary hearing in the case.

Etra said Rihanna, whose full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, signed an agreement with the jewelry companies agreeing to return each piece the day after the Grammys.

Brown was arrested Feb. 8 and charged with felony assault and making criminal threats against Rihanna.

R&B singer Chris Brown today pleaded not guilty to a felony charge to assaulting Rihanna

R&B singer Chris Brown today pleaded not guilty to a felony charge that he bit, punched, choked and threatened his pop star girlfriend,Rihanna.

A judge set a hearing for April 29, when a preliminary hearing could be scheduled.

Nearly 100 media representatives jammed the downtown courthouse entrance as Brown came through about 3:30. Deputies shielded Brown and escorted him to a freight elevator.

All available L.A. County Sheriff's deputies were summoned to the area. Although Rihanna's attorney was in court, the pop star did not attend the hearing.

Last month, a judge ordered Brown not to "annoy, harass, molest, threaten or use force or violence against anyone."

Brown faces a maximum sentence of nearly five years in prison if convicted of charges in connection with the Feb. 8 incident, which, according to police, left Rihanna’s blood splattered all over the Lamborghini he was driving.
