Slumdog Millionaire News

The actors, 10-year-old Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail and 9-year-old Rubina Ali, were flown to Los Angeles for the ceremony.

Their friends at home watched on television. "My eyes couldn't believe that I was seeing Rubina in America," said Saba Qureshi, Rubina's best friend.

Even though the movie has kids in starring roles, "Slumdog Millionaire" is rated R, which means it is not a movie for kids. Overall, the movie won eight awards, which are known as Oscars.

Children in a desperately poor neighborhood of India cheered and broke out into dance yesterday after learning that "Slumdog Millionaire," a movie starring two boys from their neighborhood, won the Academy Award for Best Picture of 2008.

Another big winner at the Sunday night awards, which are given every year, was the movie "Wall E." It won for Best Animated Feature Film, beating "Bolt" and "Kung Fu Panda."

"Slumdog Millionaire" is about a poor teenager from Mumbai, India. He becomes a contestant on the Indian version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" and is accused of cheating.

Two of the child actors in "Slumdog Millionaire" live in Bandra, one of Mumbai's slums. About 65 million p
eople live in very poor slums in India.

Politician in Malaysia nudity row

A prominent Malaysian opposition politician has offered her resignation after naked photos of her sleeping were circulated by mobile phone.
Elizabeth Wong, one of Malaysia's top human rights activists, blamed government "gutter politics" for the release of the images. Newspapers have speculated that the images were taken by an ex-boyfriend. As a single woman in a conservative society, she has been criticised by male politicians for her independence. "I wish to state that I am not ashamed of my sexuality as a woman and a single person," Ms Wong, 37, said in an emotional news conference. "I have broken no laws. I stand by the fundamental principle in a democracy that everyone has a right to privacy," she said. Gutter politics Ms Wong is a respected member of the opposition People's Justice Party, led by Anwar Ibrahim, winning her seat in the state assembly of Selangor a year ago. She has won support from both sides of the political divide, but some political opponents have jumped on the incident. "She is a single person. How can she allow a man into her room when they are not married? What's the status of the relationship?" said Mohamad Khir Toyo, the National Front ex-chief minister of Selangor. Opposition officials said a decision would be made later on whether to accept the resignation, which would trigger a by-election in Selangor. Ms Wong said she believed that the governing National Front coalition would "continue to manipulate the situation". "Accordingly I have decided to make a stand in the interests of the party and its struggle for the people," she said, as a group of supporters holding flowers and banners yelled support. She said it was "an insidious and under-handed attempt" to smear her reputation, adding that "the real objective is to discredit the party". This is the latest incident in Malaysian politics to intrude into the private lives of politicians - most of whom have been opposition figures. The government has denied a role in the scandals.

Katrina Kaif developing political acumen

Katrina Kaif’s understanding of local politics has been honed thanks to the role she is playing in Prakash Jha’s film ‘Rajniti’.

Tossing aside the rumours of her character in the film being modeled on Sonia Gandhi, it must be said that Katrina Kaif has been preparing for her role determinedly. Donning a sari or no-make up look is superficial. Katrina is sinking her teeth deeper into her character this time. At least so she claims.

The actress has been getting tomes of political gyaan from director Prakash Jha who wants Katrina to deliver the best performance of her career so far in Rajniti . The director has been educating the actress about the political structure, the election procedure and several underhand political activities that seldom make it to newspaper headlines.

Rising debt and Barack Obama's effort to rescue the economy

U.S President Barack Obama was hit with another wave of grim financial news yesterday, amid signs that his Administration is in danger of being overwhelmed by the scale of the economic crisis.

As he outlined a $75 billion (£52 billion) plan to halt home repossessions across America, evidence emerged of the enormous struggle Timothy Geithner, the Treasury Secretary, is having to come up with a detailed solution to stabilise the stricken banking sector.

Chrysler and General Motors also said that they needed up to $22 billion more in government funds to avoid collapse, leaving Mr Obama the difficult decision of whether to keep pumping taxpayers' money into the carmakers.

The motor industry received $17.4 billion in federal funds in December. Its bankruptcy could cause millions of job losses. Mr Geithner and Lawrence Summers, the White House economic adviser, must determine by March 31 whether the companies' plans for long-term survival are viable.
n another sign of the depth of the recession a report showed that construction of homes and applications for future projects dropped by 17 per cent last month to a record low.

At the heart of the internal battle inside the Treasury Department is what to do with the estimated $2 trillion of toxic and mostly mortgage-related debt that is threatening to topple the entire banking sector – the bedrock of US capitalism.

When Mr Geithner announced his plan to stabilise the financial sector last week it was received badly because it was so short on detail. The heart of the strategy – his prescription to remove the bad debt off the banks' books – was to entice private investors to buy up the toxic assets. He gave no firm proposals, however, about how the loans would be valued and how the private sector would be co-opted.

It has now emerged that Mr Geithner was deliberately vague at his press conference because he had a change of mind and suddenly began to pursue a different course.

He decided that his original plan to use government funds to buy up the toxic assets was too expensive and exposed taxpayers to too much risk, and that using the private sector was the best option.

At the same time Mr Geithner is working on the plan with a significant shortfall in staff. Only a month into his presidency Mr Obama has yet to nominate any mid-level Treasury officials.

Other departments – some still even without a Cabinet secretary – are about to be inundated with billions of dollars from the stimulus Bill signed by Mr Obama on Tuesday but with not enough staff to determine how to spend it.

Alan Greenspan, the former Chairman of the Federal Reserve and once the leading proponent of deregulation and less government in the markets, increased pressure on Mr Geithner yesterday when he said that a temporary nationalisation of some banks could be necessary. He called the crisis in the banking sector a “once in a hundred years” event.

Mr Obama's home foreclosure plan would allow many of the nine million Americans who are threatened with eviction to refinance or restructure the mortgages to reduce their monthly payments. He said that his plan was needed to avoid “even greater havoc”.

The President said that the home repossession crisis “is unravelling homeownership, the middle class and the American Dream itself. But if we act boldly and swiftly to arrest this downward spiral, every American will benefit”.

Karisma Kapoor Biography

Biography

Born to one of the most illustrious family of Bollywood one thought Karishma Kapoor, daughter of Babita and Randhir Kapoor, had a silver spoon to her privilege and all doors would open to her automatically.

Only Karishma and her fans know what it took for her to reach where she is today. Hardwork, patience, pitfalls, perseverance, she has seen and gone through them all.

Karishma's career started with prancing along seashores and trees to mundane numbers opposite a small-time hero. Under the guidance of mother Babita, an actress of consequence herself, Karishma improved on her acting, dialogue delivery and dance skills, catapulting herself into a league where she could work in better films.

Exploitative that the film industry is, Lolo, as she is fondly addressed, wasn't spared from taking the brunt. There were vulgar dance numbers, revealing clothes and the rest of the publicity gimmicks that Karishma did which probably otherwise she would not have looked at. She was ambitious and wanted to prove to the world of her capabilities, so she waited with patience.

Her perseverance paid off. Today Karishma is an actress of reckoning and a star in her own right. Every bit of this achievement goes to her hard work and determination. On the event of her younger sister's entry into films, 25-year-old Karishma already relaxes and basks in the glory of her achievements.

A multifaceted actress, the pair of Karishma-Govinda gave several hits. But it was in 'Raja Hindustani’ that one saw a shift in Karishma's performance. So power-packed was she in the film that it immediately fetched her the Filmfare's Best Actress award for 1996, apart from being the biggest hit of that year.(Apunkachice.com)

Medona, Youth Craze Once upon a time

Singer, performer, actress. Born Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone in Bay City, Michigan, on August 16, 1958, to parents Silvio "Tony" Ciccone and Madonna Fortin. Tony, the son of Italian immigrants, was the first of his family to go to college, where he earned a degree in engineering. Madonna's mother, an x-ray technician and former dancer, was of French Canadian descent. After their marriage in 1955, the couple moved to Pontiac, Michigan, to be close to Tony's job as a defense engineer. Madonna was born three years later, during a visit with family in Bay City. The third of six children, Madonna learned early on how to handle her role as the middle child, admitting that she was "the sissy of the family" who often used her feminine wiles to get her way.

Her parents' strict observation of the Catholic faith played a large role in Madonna's childhood. "My mother was a religious zealot," Madonna explains. "There were always priests and nuns in my house growing up." Many elements of Catholic iconography-including her mother's statues of the Sacred Heart, the habits of the nuns at her Catholic elementary school, and the Catholic altar at which she and her family prayed daily-later became the subject of Madonna's most controversial works.

Another heavy influence on Madonna's early life was her mother, who was diagnosed with breast cancer during her pregnancy with Madonna's youngest sister. Treatment had to be delayed until the baby reached full term, but by then the disease had grown too strong. On December 1st, 1963, at the age of 30, her mother passed away. Madonna was five years old.

Her mother's death significantly affected Madonna's adolescence. Haunted by the memories of her mother's frailty and passive demeanor during her final days, Madonna was determined to make her own voice heard. "I think the biggest reason I was able to express myself and not be intimidated was by not having a mother," she says. "For example, mothers teach you manners. And I absolutely did not learn any of those rules and regulations."

She fought especially hard against the rules imposed by her stepmother, Joan Gustafson, who met Madonna's father while working as the family housekeeper. Madonna says Gustafson often made her take care of the younger children in the household, a task she greatly resented. "I really saw myself as the quintessential Cinderella," Madonna later said. "I think that's when I really thought about how I wanted to do something else and get away from all that." She rebelled against her traditional upbringing by turning her conservative clothing into revealing outfits, frequenting underground gay nightclubs, and rejecting her religious background.
